「お母さん、私は政府を信じるべきですか？」
先日、ナタリーによる「マザー」のカヴァーについて記事にした。
数日経って、まだ私はノックアウト状態である。
だからもう少し、自分勝手に書く。
原曲「マザー」は、大作「ザ・ウォール」の一曲。
大体の歌詞内容は知っていたが、ちゃんと読むのは今回初めてだった。
元々有名なフレーズではあるが、
「お母さん、私は政府を信じるべきですか」が改めて沁みる。
沁みて、沁みて、仕方が無いくらい沁みてくる。
ディキシー・チックスが政治的大論争に巻き込まれ、
もみくちゃになってから、早くも１０年が経つ。
現状がどうなっているのか詳しくは知らないが、
大衆からの圧力を彼女ほど知っているアーティストはいまい。
その彼女が歌う。
「お母さん、彼らが私を戦いの最前線に送り込む事はないの？
こんな事を聞くのは時間の無駄？」と。
ロジャー・ウォーターズの詞、恐るべし。
それを選曲したセンスと勇気も。
そしてもう一つ、
"Mama's gonna keep baby healthy and clean"
「ママは、愛する子供を健全で清潔にしておきたいもの」
という部分がある。
この「ヘルシー アンド クリーン」のヴォーカルが、圧巻。
ピンク・フロイドの歌では、
特に引っ掛からなかったこの部分が、
ナタリーだと迫力が凄い。
「ヘルシー アンド クリーン」
好感度の高いＣＭフレーズの様な言葉が、
まさかこれ程まで心に迫って来るとは。
彼女自身、二人の子の母親である。
どんな思いで、この辺りのパートを歌ったのか？
とにかく、聴けば聴くほど、いろんな事を考えてしまうのだ。
